A new chapter for Sunnyvale Town Center began Oct. 19 with a bit of destruction.
The property’s new owners were on hand along with city officials to witness construction machinery tear down part of an incomplete, derelict structure that has loomed over the site as a symbol of stalled construction. Hearing the sickening crunch of metal was cathartic for residents who have waited nearly a decade for the project’s completion.
An excited crowd gathered downtown at the center’s Redwood Square for a groundbreaking ceremony with the property’s new owners STC Venture, a joint venture between Hunter Storm, Sares Regis Group of Northern California and J.P. Morgan Asset Management.
Deke Hunter, commercial developer for Hunter Storm, said construction will begin at the start of 2017. Plans are to complete residential components, retail storefronts and street improvements.
